Short Film Summaries/Reviews

About a Girl: This short film consists almost entirely of following a thirteen ear old girl's walk down a canal as sh elaborates on her life story to the spectator. She covers detailed information about her parents and her relationships with them. There is a sudden twist at the end of the film wherein the spectator discovers the plastic bag she was holding during her trip down the canal contained a dead baby. It is thrown into the river before the final shot of the film. In my opinion this twist at the end did not add any quality to the short film and was unnecessary, as up until this point I found the protagonist's journey interesting to discover. When the Day Breaks: 'When the day breaks' is a cartoon that delves into the lives of animals that live and dress humanely, in a seemingly small town. We are given insight into firstly a chicken character's perspective and then into a pig character's. There is a reference to the joke "Why did the chicken...

ideas for short film/script

DEVELOPMENT OF A CHARACTER: From a Mouse's perspective: looking down below at flats from the cracks in a roof -We see snippets of conversation/introductions to human characters -We realise that it is from the mouse's perspective only when we hear scuttling in the sound of the mouse travelling to the next flat -We start each snippet with a "birds eye view" and the camera could zoom down to be at the level of the actors Snippet ideas: (not in chronological order yet) -(A level biology student directing a mouse and writing copious notes -A couple arguing about how to get rid of a mouse infestation -A family eating dinner and a mouse coming out into the dining room and the children screaming and the mouse essentially ruining the meal) NOT THE DRIVING FORCE OF A CONVERSATION -Domestic violence  The mouse's voice talking from his own perspective would also be included Possible idea: The mouse tries to be helpful in someone's house (passing someone sa...

Representations, Aesthetics & Institutional Context

Image
Representations: Racial/Ethnicity/Gender Gender- How both genders are represented in the scene of Vincent's first visit to Mia's house -Powerfully representing women - Femme fatal without the evil motive Sound is all diegetic "son of a preacher man"- sexual element, and juxtaposes the events of the scene, Mia's voice is seductive/mysterious- she is very assertive and self assured, giving her a sense of power Camera moves in behind both characters to introduce them. Female: Mysterious, seductive: Only extreme closeups of different parts of Mia's body contrast with shots of shots of Vincent, the extreme closeup of mia's lips open in front of the microphone has clear sexual connotations. High angle shot of Vincent from the female portrait's perspective- contrasts with the scene before where there is a low angle shot of Vincent looking much more powerful with a gun. Travolta is directed by Thurman where to go and control is given...
