Representations, Aesthetics & Institutional Context
Representations:
Racial/Ethnicity/Gender
Gender-
How both genders are represented in the scene of Vincent's first visit to Mia's house
-Powerfully representing women - Femme fatal without the evil motive
Sound is all diegetic "son of a preacher man"- sexual element, and juxtaposes the events of the scene, Mia's voice is seductive/mysterious- she is very assertive and self assured, giving her a sense of power
Camera moves in behind both characters to introduce them. Female: Mysterious, seductive: Only extreme closeups of different parts of Mia's body contrast with shots of shots of Vincent, the extreme closeup of mia's lips open in front of the microphone has clear sexual connotations. High angle shot of Vincent from the female portrait's perspective- contrasts with the scene before where there is a low angle shot of Vincent looking much more powerful with a gun.

Travolta is directed by Thurman where to go and control is given to the female character. He is completely at her wim like a puppet,
this is highlighted in the mise-en-scene with the control buttons representing how she is in control, the cigarette- a masculine habit and suggestive of power and control

Partnership between black and white characters
constant use of the word "nigger" was controversial as it was racially derogatory
The black character plays the peace maker; he is philosophical and thoughtful, and the white character plays the evil
-Jules goes against every stereotype in film history by being a strong black male that turns out to be the hero

These notes are good but could easily be improved by commenting on what effect these points have on the audience an how they understand the film.
ReplyDeleteRemember, the key to good film analysis is not only identifying points but also explaining what effect it has on the audience.
If you can add this detail, that would be great.
