Short Film Summaries/Reviews

About a Girl:

This short film consists almost entirely of following a thirteen ear old girl's walk down a canal as sh elaborates on her life story to the spectator. She covers detailed information about her parents and her relationships with them. There is a sudden twist at the end of the film wherein the spectator discovers the plastic bag she was holding during her trip down the canal contained a dead baby. It is thrown into the river before the final shot of the film.
In my opinion this twist at the end did not add any quality to the short film and was unnecessary, as up until this point I found the protagonist's journey interesting to discover.Image result for about a girl short film

When the Day Breaks:

'When the day breaks' is a cartoon that delves into the lives of animals that live and dress humanely, in a seemingly small town. We are given insight into firstly a chicken character's perspective and then into a pig character's. There is a reference to the joke "Why did the chicken cross the road?" when the chicken character is knocked over when attempting to cross a road, by a van. There is an evident intentional selfish aspect to the pig character as when she knocks over the chicken's bag of apples, she walks away without an apology. Fascinatingly, the spectator takes a trip inside the wires of household appliances and down into gutters, all of which seem to connect underground.
I enjoyed this film as it was unique, and on a deeper level represented the animalistic traits of human beings

Connect:

A short film set entirely on a bus journey where two adults make a seemingly romantic connection. This short film was touching and reminded me to be more mindful when I am travelling alone to examine other people and how they behave. The only part of the film I thought unnecessary was the short moment when he female protagonist imagined someone being shot in front of  her eyes on the bus; it seemed to me very random as I could find no link with this event and the rest of the story, therefore I felt it did not add any quality or substance to the overall film.Image result for connect short film

Curfew:

The short film, 'Curfew', tells the story of a suicidal man who is saved from killing himself in his own bathtub with the hope that he will have something new to live for. The film consists mainly of the evening outing of the male protagonist and his niece who he has been asked to look after by his sister in a moment of desperation. Overall I found this short film extremely thought provoking, and enticing to watch.

The gunfighter:

This short film is a western style consists merely of a short moment in time in a bar. A few groups of men are having a casual discussion when it becomes apparent that the narrator that the audience can hear, that we previously assumed was non diegetic sound, was in fact diegetic and could be heard by each of the characters. This was an unexpected twist and provided humour, however from this point I could see no further worthwhile progression in the plot of the film, and it began to bore me.Image result for the gunfighter short film
