captain fantastic Dear stalking scene

Sound:

- natural sounds of water flowing and birds chirping, create a calming and relaxing atmosphere. The sound of the deer being killed suddenly and greatly increases the volume of the sound for an intense moment before the sound becomes quiet again.

-no dialogue, in the introduction of all of the characters, sets up questions as to who they are and makes them seem abnormal to the spectator immediately. The spectator does not feel that they can sympathise with them or associate themselves with their way of life. They seem like strangers.

-"Today the boy is dead, and in his place is a man" - this line has connotations with ceremonies of aboriginal and native american cultures. This acts as a confirmation to the spectator that the characters live a secluded way of life.

-non-diegetic music immediately after the first line, low key synthesising music using held notes with harmonies and gradually descending sequence of notes. As the music starts to play the characters wash off their black face paint and resemble more humane people who the spectator can be more familiar with and can potentially align with.

Cinematography:

Helicopter shot with the camera tracking back and tilting downwards followed by a low angle shot through the tree canopy.

Shot reverse shot of the deer and Bo

Extreme closeup of the deer eating

Handheld camera when the dear is being slaughtered, creates a sense of anxiety and confusedness. It is intense and sets up a controversial atmosphere as to whether the spectator should agree with the concept of what is happening in the scene.

Closeup of the blood covered knife, highlights the controversial nature of slaughtering animals, the director is directly provoking ideas in the spectator's mind, but without enforcing a particular point of view onto the audience. (lack of music)

There is a shallow depth of field as Bo's brothers and sisters walk up behind him into the background of the frame

Over the shoulder shots of Bo and Ben whilst Ben is carrying out the ritual ceremony.

Medium Closeups of the children staring at the ritual ceremony in pride, allows the spectator to understand that the family takes pride in their way of life and are all committed to their rituals. This again creates ambivolence for the spectator as to who they are and whether they can align with the characters.

We feel love and admiration for the characters, and refreshed by their unique lifestyle, as it is leaves out all the negative aspects of  capitialist society.

Editing:
Slow editing pace whilst deer is feeding on the trees; suddenly the editing becomes extremely fast with cuts that last a second as the deer is being slaughtered. This symbolizes the climax of the scene, and sets up nervousness and tension for the spectator.

The longest shot within the sequence of brief shots of the deer being slaughtered is of the skin being torn with the knife of and blood seeping out of the deer's body. This evokes a sense of fearlessness in Bo's character immediately. The spectator regards Bo as a strong independant woodsman.
Difficult to relate to the characters at the start of the film.
Different issues are raised.
Challenges a meat eater's hypocracy.... first thought may be discgust but then the spectator will realise that they eat meat themselves so it is an immediate contradiction.
The editing becomes slow after the deer has been slaughtered.

Peformance:
When Ben raises his hands, he looks like a priest and the ceremony can resemble a religious ritual. The family appear like a community of which he is the leader.

In the sequence after the dear stalking scene, there is calming synth music combined with a bright high saturation color palette. The high key nostalgic music is complimentary to establishing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the spectator. It sounds almost magical, which helps to define the actions that are going on as special and meaningful.
This helps the spectator to see Ben's faily light with an inviting and accepting attitude, and possibly to look up to it as a beautiful way of living. This allows the spectator to align with Ben's family.
