The dog chase scene, no country for old men
Mise en scene
it gets light very quickly.
Sound
- The lack of non diegetic music in the background makes the scene unpredictable and forces the spectator to work harder in terms of gathering their opinions on the character of Lewelyn and analysing the severity of the situation. The sound of the truck is menacing and persistent. combined with
- Exaggerated gunshot sounds
Editing
-Fast paced, heightens tension.
-Many cutaways to the car increase tension as it allows the spectator to be sutured into the scene, being able to view the danger of the situation. Horror film references with the off centre framing of the car on the hill. Pov shot of the car driving closer = align with moss
lightening = pathetic fallacy.
The spectator's expectations are confounded.
Cinematography
-Extreme low key lighting, creates a sense of danger and uneasiness as well as highlighting the unclarity as to whether Moss will get away.
- As the lighting becomes slightly more high key as Moss starts swimming through the lake, a sense of hope is created, and the spectator gathers confidence that Moss will master the situation and will be able to escape.
-Aberrant reading: reaching the flowing water could represent Moss moving swiftly passed trouble.
-Contrast between extreme long shot of car in the distance and closeup of Moss.
-The lighting of the truck appears demonic.
There is a shadowy silhouette shot of the henchmen pursuing Moss from a low angle increases the sense of alienation from them
Performance
-No dialogue throughout the scene apart from the unclear mutterings of the police as they try to catch Moss. _is very calm in the pressurising situation
-As Moss ducks under the water as he sees the figure come over the hill with the gun, this suggests he is one step ahead of the game and is able to quickly make decisions of how to survive in this life threatening situation. This suggests to the audience that Lewelyn is experienced in combat and situations of pressure due to his army training and worldly and that he is skilled in this arena.
-Furthermore as Moss crouches, smoothly and quickly assembling his pistol in order to shoot the dog, the spectator remains to have full faith that he will not be beaten by the situation at hand.
Moss therefore expresses themes of certainty and confidence in this scene to the audience and potentially becomes a figure that the spectator can align with to make themselves feel safe whilst viewing the scene.
