Class Presentations kevin
Caitlin Grills - End scene
-In the beginning as she gets in the car and sits in front of Kevin there is non - diegetic music in the background with the lyrics "nobody wants me" -'Nobody's Child'. This reflects how Kevin's life has been surrounded by neglect and lack of authentic affection.
-Mid shot of Kevin the first time he appears, with a long cut. This allows Kevin to appear is timid in front of his mother, showing a need for her that he has never possessed before.
-Racked camera focus, the focus shifts from Kevin -> Eva.
-It is is the first time that Kevin has showed humility (modesty), this is exemplified in the Medium Closeup of Kevin.
-Kevin is framed at a three-quarter angle
-Closeups of Kevin and Eva heighten the emotional intensity; this creates a claustrophobic atmosphere for the spectator.
- Eva is presented centre frame in the immediate aftermath of the crime; she is now off centre, this could be as she is more at ease.
-Kevin is centre frame, Eva as the narrator has the focus shifted away from herself to Kevin.
-In opposition, after Kevin answers that he isn't sure why he commit the crime, there is a medium close up of Eva that is slightly zoomed out from before and at a slight high angle; this demonstrates?
A: her vulnerability/weakness
B: a sense of relief that Eva has the answer to why Kevin did it
The dark corners of the room (Vignette), this emphasises the significance of...??
Has Kevin Matured?
When Kevin walks out, he aggressively springs up from his chair showing that he has no real ability to express emotion.
Does Kevin get up to break the moment and escape from his mother or does he initiate embracing his mother?
There is a low angle shot of Eva as she walks out, she is gaining strength. She no longer relies on being in the role of a motherly figure for society to validate her.
Deep depth of field
The sheer light subtracts any clarity from the shot, it leaves the next part of the story to the imagination. It could be a hopeful awakening.
-Kevin appears more vulnerable, more open and like an adult
NOTE: MEDIUM CLOSEUP = HEAD AND SHOULDERS SHOT
Eliot Soraff - Christmas Party
Handheld shot sutures spectator into the scene and relaxes the spectator. Camera cuts to a mls of eva; handheld sitting down and smiling whilst everyone else is dancing isolates her
Mirrors the supermarket scene in that we start of as a spectator thinking that she is able to return to normal daily life, which idea is then shattered at the end with a plot twist. Her smile represents her appreciation of being able to be in a social environment however she is uncomfortable and self conscious of her own presence as she doesn't feel like she fits in. Hence why she is isolating herself
The framing of the shot suggests Eva's intimidation as it makes her seem small and vulnerable,
Colin is filmed from a slight low angle - making him more intimidating
POV shot of mother and daughter makes the spectator feels sympathy for loosing her daughter. Slightly slow motion shows that Eva is missing out on having a daughter. Makes you question whether it is Eva's fault that she has lost her daughter. She has no agency / why has she lost the idea of motherhood.
Jonathan Sinyor - Archery
In focus camera, natural lighting, foreshadowing, Kevin is getting joy though archery.
Hyperreal sound as the arrow hits the window of the Kitchen that Eva is in. This could be a metaphor for later on, how he targets everyone but her with arrows.
The target in his eye either shows what his true intentions have bee, in hindsight Eva feels that Kevin's whole life has built up to his purpose
Kevin missing the target on his first show by a long way could signify Eva's false memory of it hitting the window so accurately, and Kevin directing it at her
The use of slow motion suddenly finishes, and the stopping of the music
Fetishization of the weapon of the arrow
Kevin represents the Id, the instinctive desire to act
Eerie music and low key lighting, and Eva's dull clothing in the present moment contrasting with the bright colours from when she was younger. Eva wears no makeup.
Serial killers represent the id in our Psyche
