Ideology and Narrative
How useful has an ideological critical approach been in understanding the narrative resolution of your chosen films?
Or
How useful has an ideological critical approach been in understanding binary oppositions in the narratives of your chosen films?
How does the beginning of the film establish the narrative?
Key word: what is a binary opposite?
Binary opposites: Inner Conflict or Outer Conflict
Inner Conflict: Inner conflict are the emotion hang-ups and neuroses that we all have. Whether it is something obvious such as a person refusing to ever swim because their dad drowned when they were a child, or something more subtle, inner conflict is often the deeper, darker side of a character.
Inner conflict often hinders the character from developing as a person and achieving their goal in a less obvious way than a physical force.
Outer conflict: Outer conflict are the obstacles which confront your character and attempt to stop them achieving their goal. These can range from the character's relationships to freakish zombie mutants.
Narrative theories:
-Equilibrium - Todorov
-Linear/Non linear/Cyclical
-Character types - Vlademir Propp*
-Three-act structure
-Binary opposition - Levis Strauss
-Enigma VS action codes - Roland Barthes
Vlademir Propp: He found that despite the large number of characters which appeared in the folk tales, there were only eight character types:
The villain: CONNOR & POVERTY & JOANNE
The helper: BILLY
The Princess or Prize: BILLY
Her Father: CONNOR
The Donor (somebody who gives someone something): CONNOR
The Hero: BILLY / MIA
The False Hero: CONNOR
The Dispatcher (somebody who sends someone to do something): JOANNE
Ideology:
-Education
-Ideological state/family
-Religion/church
-Media
-Laws/policies
[abstract morality]
-We are encouraged to empathise with Mia as it is told through her perspective with the Micro features.
Structuralism:
"Cinema is a set of syntagmatic relations - that is, of universal rules, a set of relations that could be described as the grammar of film".
Levi-Strauss theorised that since all cultures are products of the human brain, there must be, beneath the surface, features that are common to all.
The 'structures' that produce meaning in film are auteur, linguistic, social and institutional. It does not take into account spectatorship or ideology.
Structuralism attempted to deromanticise the filmmaker as auteur and apply a more scientific approach to uncover the underlying structures of film.
Levi - strauss' binary opposition:
Narrative tension is based on opposition or conflict. This can be as a simple as two characters fighting, but more often functions at an ideological.
She learns.
Binary opposites in fishtank:
Man vs Woman
Young vs Old
Strong vs Weak
Empowered vs Victim
