Art movements and Techniques

To understand what cinema is you have to look at what was going on in art at the time, an understanding that informs art cinema, and to consider film as an art.

MODERNISM
 A celebration of modern art: something new and fresh that provides a new way of looking at things. Includes experimentation; there is a strong commitment to the machine, including the machinery of cinema, as a progressive force, promising to create a bold new future.

CONSTRUCTIVISM

a rejection of classical forms of art, a celebration of industrialisation and technology

Constructivism celebrates the machine, including the human machine – with new theories of acting and physical movement based on exploring the mechanics of the human body and human communication.

Montage: The combination of oppositional elements to create something new.

BRECHTIAN DISTANCIATION
 When you are distanced as an audience, similar to how Brecht worked in the theatre, from what is going on in the film.

When the audience is embedded in the film, for example through shot - reverse shot and various editing techniques.
