Behind Locked Doors - Character Profiles

Madeleine, a paranoid, nosy but caring mother. 36 years old
Works as an actress, starred in a popular american television series for teenagers when she was nineteen years old, where she met her husband. Since she has had moderate success, playing supporting roles in two feature films, and starring in many pieces of theater. She is self-conscious of her appearance and is adamant she will keep having plastic surgery so that she will stay looking young. She therefore spends a large proportion of her spare time at the gym training to maintain her "young body".  She loves and is still infatuated with her husband Leo, after almost seventeen years of marriage. She is most concerned about how he views her and it is vital to her to always look her best around him to impress him. She has deep inner concern, you may call paranoia, that the ageing process will lead to a subtraction of her beauty, and accordingly her husbands sexual attraction for her.


Leo, Madeleine's humorous and loving husband who has more to hide about himself than is apparent. 42 years old. Works as an actor with great success, having starred in four feature films in the last decade with a constant stream of work in acting, playing supporting roles in other films. His role in the american television series where he met his wife lead to a major partnership with "Jo Malone", where he was the face of the perfume brand for ten years. He loves his wife dearly, but is full of himself and knows how obsessed she, and thousands of other woman are with him. He knows, and considers it normal and almost acceptable, that a man of his status may be tempted to cheat on his wife in the future as she ages, with a younger woman. Albeit in his mind he is sure that Madeleine would never become aware of this and that no-one would draw his love away from her.


Alice, daughter of Madeleine and Leo, a rebellious and secretive 16 year old twin, who abuses her wealth of natural intelligence by not working to the best of her abilities at school.
Has an extremely packed social life, and is out most nights including weekdays. She enjoys being in constant social company as having good friends is important to her, it also gives her an excuse not to work.



Charlie, Alice's twin brother, is extremely mature for his age and is humble about modelling for many of the major fashion brands in Britain, he appears a very cool and down to earth person but likes to keep his private life private.
His social life is also extremely important to him, he has a lot of friends in the modelling and acting business who he has met through shoots and fashion shows. He spends most of his spare time in their company, even though he is younger than most of them.



Edward, 31 years old.
Founder of a successful cosmetics company who have 5 stores in London and a successful online business. The cosmetics company provide great makeup for all types of skin however they test on animals, hence why he has contrary views to his partner on animal and human equality, and how he would provide a solution to their rat infestation. He is an extremely passionate businessman considers himself a capitalist. One might say he behaves selfishly  by always prioritizing his own desires, often neglecting other's.

Lara, 24 years old.
Environmentalist who works for the research sector in WWF. She is very talented  at science. The income however that she receives is small and her main reason for working in this sector is her passion for animal and human equality. She considers herself a down to earth person although she looks down on/judges those who do not agree with her point of view. This is a huge cause of friction between her and Edward as he has Oppositional views to her, but she is infatuated with him, and admires his ruthless attitude towards business.


Oliver, 32 years old.
Rocketed to success in the stockbroking business at the age of 24 and made his first million by the age of 27, his success seemed never ending, as he continually surpassed his own expectations of the money he would make. He lives alone a melancholy state. Extreme wealth lead him to drug overdose, Oliver became hooked on a variety of drugs from a young age; he now suffers from schizophrenia and depression alone, after he split with his girlfriend when he "started becoming violent and unpleasant to be around".

What was the task?: The task was to write short but detailed introductions to the characters in my script, that would help the reader and myself to get a better idea of the personalities of my characters.

What did you learn from it?: I discovered more about my own characters whilst completing this task and learned that it made the scriptwriting process easier, as I felt like I knew my characters well enough to write in accurate lines for them of what they would say.

How will this help you in the Future?: In the future, this will be beneficial as it will remind me that whether I am directing a play or film, or writing a play or film; that I should always write character profiles for the characters to discover more about their personalities and tendencies.
