The apartment scene notes

The apartment scene notes

Lighting: Changes throughout the scene; starts with a high key, warm pink light to reflect a more relaxed atmosphere and changes to a low key, dim lighting to reflect an uneasy, dangerous atmosphere before a character is shot.

Sound: Creshendo of dramatic music whilst Li''l Ze shoots one person after another
Music that was playing suddenly cuts when knocking on the doors occurs, to startle the audience and forebode.

Narrative: Non linear
Structure- Flashback to past at the start to illustrate how events accumulate to a certain point
Character arc- Lil Ze becomes unlikeable
-We are given information about past events that averts our first impressions

Camera: Fixed position- suggests the audience are being given important information. Does not create any inequality between the audience and the actors as a low shot does.

Canted angle- shows imbalance of statuses and fates in the City, and creates a dizzy uneasiness and lack of control.

Transition- fades are used to display the inevitability of death, people coming and going, quickens pace - life is cheap and can easily be replaced, belittling the importance of individuals

Mise en scene: Colour fades and props vanish to create an empty feeling, without comfort and happiness.

  1. Again, while your note for this are accurate, using screenshots from the sequence you are analysing will help you not only identify with your notes in months to come. But also having the opportunity to look at the screenshots will train you to notice the smaller details within the scene, looking at all elements of mise-en-scene.

    All the best
