Opening sequence notes
City of God Opening Sequence on Cinematography, Mise-en-scene, Editing and Sound
Sound
-Opening shot of knife is foreboding danger, the diegetic sound is quick and frantic- creating a dangerous representation
-Non diegetic sound of the drum beat, reflects the culture and the fast pace
- Energy bursts from both types of sound
- Silence when the chicken escapes to mark the moment and allow the audience to regather thoughts
Editing
-Immediately forced into another world with lots of transitions fading in and fading out, as if you are blinking and waking up on another world
Cinematography
-By making all the shots closeups, you are given the chicken's perspective, this does not allow the audience to know where they are, and creates intensity.
the camera is positioned at the chicken's level to give theaudience a deeper insight into the chicken's perspective
- the cinematography changes to force you to see through Rocket's eyes
- the golden colour represents the innocence of Rocket's youth, before he was exposed to more violence; and contrasts strongly with the dull colours, used at the very beginning when Rocket was 10 years older. See below the colour contrast
Continuity is used when the camera spins elliptically, to travel back in time to represent a flashback. This makes a seamless transition.
